ANTIPAS BACK AT CHICKEN INN
4 January 2017
CHICKEN Inn are set to unveil their new coach Joey Antipas in the coming days to kick-start preparations for the 2018 season.
The 2015 champions did not seek renewal with Rahman Gumbo as they were already decided on which coach will take them into the new season.
This week the club spokesperson Tavengwa Hara was still not giving much on the expected unveiling but admitted they needed to start serious preparations for the new season.
“I’m sure next week, we will be in a position to make an announcement once the chairman is back in the country.
“For now there is nothing much I can say. But yes, we need to start preparations for the new season. The other teams are already well ahead,” he said.
H-Metro understands the club will make the unveiling at an official event, where they will also be announcing the assistant coaches.
A source said: “It was not proper for them to announce a new coach when Rahman’s contract was still running.
“So they had to wait for December 31 and anytime from now, they will be in a position to do the unveiling.”
Antipas won the league title with Chicken Inn in 2015 before he left at the beginning of 2016 for South African side Amazulu.
Rahman managed to finish fourth in 2016 and got the same position in the just ended season.
“After finishing fourth, expectations were that the club would go on and win the title which was won by FC Platinum. Although the club is patient with their coaches, the belief is that they were not in a rebuilding phase and they needed to improve,” said the source.
“The availability of Antipas in the market did not make the situation any better as they there was already a stronger connection between the coach and some of the club’s management.”
Players that spoke to H-Metro were also aware that the former coach is bouncing back.
Antipas was however not short of admirers for the better part of December.
He was also linked with Ngezi Platinum and ZPC Kariba. Ngezi later announced that they are sticking with their coach Tonderai Ndiraya while ZPC have been in the wilderness, seeking for Sunday Chidzambwa’s replacement.
