Chiyangwa tips Zim for COSAFA cup

COSAFA and ZIFA president Philip Chiyangwa has tipped the Warriors as favorites to win the 2017 edition of the Cosafa Cup to be held in South Africa from June 25-July 9.
Speaking after the draw on Wednesday, in which Zimbabwe were drawn in Group B together with Mozambique, Madagascar and the Seychelles, Chiyangwa said, he is the president and his players must also lead by example by winning the regional tournament.
Last year, the Warriors were eliminated in the group stage, despite beating Seychelles 5-0 following draws against Swaziland beat Madagascar in the opening matches in Namibia.
South Africa are the defending champions.
Chiyangwa said, “Tisu vanhu vacho. We were representing Southern Africa at AFCON. We were scoring. We have to win it. I am their president and my country must also lead by example.
“I want to show them. Zimbabwe is strong, and the president comes from Zimbabwe. He is also ready and strong. We don’t look at those claiming that they are better ranked on the FIFA rankings, we won’t look at that,” he said.
Chiyangwa was elected as president of the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) in December last year after he stood unopposed at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting in South Africa and he took over from Mr Suketu Patel, who elected not to stand after completing two terms in office.
The regional showpiece tournament was first played in 1997 and has been won four times (each) by South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Angola have three titles to their name and Namibia one.
Zimbabwe have been ever-present in the Cosafa Cup, participating in each edition from the inaugural 1997 tournament onwards winning it in 2000, 2003, 2005 and 2009.
