Cop vanishes with $90k

A police officer employed as Chinhoyi Assistant Finance Officer is on the run after swindling at least $90 000 from the police force.
A case of fraud against Sergeant Lameck Karombo, 33, Force Number 060660X has since been opened at Chinhoyi Central CR 01/01/08 and Central Investigations Department (CID) 07/01/18.
Sgt Karombo resides at Banket police camp.
Allegations are that on January 2 this year Inspector Tendai Hativagone, 40, who is stationed at ZRP Orange Groove camp in Chinhoyi, requested a bank staement for ZRP Mashonaland West Contingency CBZ Bank Chinhoyi branch account number 22980790015.
Insp Hativagone then realised that a transaction of $60 000 and $30 000 respectively were effected on December 21, 2017.
Investigations carried out by the cops revealed that the money was transferred into Sgt Karombo’s personal account, Agribank account number 110000073369.
An application was done to freeze the accused’s account with a remaining bank balance of $13 609. 15 as he had already used $76 390.85.
A follow up on his whereabouts were made and it was discovered that he was not present at work as expected.
Checks with him through his cellphone reflected that he was in Harare were he said that he had had a problem and would arrive at work around 4:30pm.
Sources within the police force said the money was meant for police officers assisting in Biometric Voter Registration process.
Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba yesterday said she was yet to get details of the matter.
“I am not yet aware of the case,” she said.
