Corrupt cops nabbed

TWO traffic policemen stationed at Ruwa Police Station were caught with money they had demanded as bribe from an unlicensed driver when they were at a roadblock.
Ronald Chawira and Beryl Ruvimbo Hundi were hauled before Harare magistrate Vongai Muchuchuti-Guwuriro charged with criminal abuse of office.
The duo denied the charges.
The State led by Nancy Chandakaona had it that on April 25 at around mid-day, the police internal investigations department received a tip-off to the effect that there were two police officers who were manning a road block along Chiremba Road, Ruwa.
Police Internal Investigations team were also reportedly told that Chawira and Hundi had demanded a bribe of US$220 from Elphas Ngarava who they had allegedly arrested for driving without a license and fire extinguisher.
The Police Internal Investigations team was also told that Chawira and Hundi had also confiscated the car keys demanding US$220.
A trap was set up using Ngarava’s relative, Popular Garande.
Garande is said to have handed the trap money to Ngarava, who then passed it to Chawira.
Chawira is alleged to have handed the money to Hundi, who did not issue a traffic police receipt.
Ngarava is said to have driven off before the police team pounced on the two traffic officers.
