Couple dupes lawyer
28 December 2018
A Nyanga couple allegedly duped a Harare lawyer while sourcing funds for their wedding.
Rutendo Clara Toto appeared alone before Harare magistrate Victoria Mashamba facing charges of fraud as her husband committed suicide before he was apprehended.
It is the State’s case that sometime in September, the complainant who happens to be top Vunganai Chivore, was looking for timber when he saw an advert to the effect that Toto and her husband were selling timber in Nyanga.
It is alleged that Chivore was interested in the timber and paid a deposit of $7 750 into Toto’s Steward Bank account.
The duo promised to deliver the timber on December 20 but failed to do so.
Chivore went to Nyanga in pursuit of his timber and caught them during their wedding.
Upon arrest, Toto’s husband fled and then committed suicide later.
Toto was released on $100 bail and was ordered not to interfere with witnesses, report every Friday at Hatfield Police Station and to reside with her brother in Harare until the matter is finalised.
Shepherd Makonde represented the State.
