KHAMA OUT AGAIN
31 October 2017
KHAMA Billiat was removed from the Warriors squad after his club indicated that he was injured ahead of the two international friendly matches set for November, an official has said.
The Warriors face Lesotho and Namibia in international friendly matches set for 8 and 11 November respectively.
The Mamelodi Sundowns star, who again missed the last AFCON qualifier as a result of injury, was the biggest omission from the team announced by caretaker coach Wilson Mutekede yesterday.
However, what raises eyebrows is that Khama has since made a comeback for his club.
“The club indicated that he was injured when we were coming up with the squad. He was in the squad but we had to replace him after they said he is injured and still being assessed,” Mutekede said.
Zifa’s position on the star player and the situation on the ground is in contrast, a development that could once again result in club and nation confrontation.
The norm around the world however is that players called up for duty report to the national teams for the local doctors to make their own tests and give a position.
As things stand, it is unlikely Khama can even make the trip as he has already been omitted but likely to be involved a lot Sundowns campaign.
Pitso Mosimane’s charges have been failing to get into the groove and were knocked out of the Telkom challenge by Chippa United in their last game.
“So we have worked with that position that we have and the manager Wellington Mpandare can give you more details,” Mutekede added.
The Warriors interim technical team, which also includes CAPS United coach Lloyd Chitembwe, have included some upcoming players from Europe while Knowledge Musona and Marvelous Nakamba are also part of the squad.
These include Celtic star Kundai Benyu, Leicester star Admiral Muskwe, Leyton Orient’s Macauley Bonne and Nottingham Forest’s Tendai Darikwa.
“The manager has been in touch with all those players and they have expressed their interest to play for the country. And that is why we have included them in the squad for the two friendly matches,” he said.
Other players that started in the last AFCON qualifier and are not part of the team include Eric Chipeta who terminated his contract with Ajax Cape Town, injured Patson Jaure, Onismo Bhasera, injured Danny Phiri and Tanzania based Thabani Kamusoko.
“What we are also trying to do is have a big squad to select from when the AFCON qualifiers are back. That is why we have basically tried to give a chance to other players and see how they play.
“We have also a number of established players in the squad announced, players that we already know what they can offer,” Mutekede said.
