WARRIORS legends coach Sunday Chidzambwa says they will try to start with players that are still competitive when they face Barcelona legends at National Sports Stadium on Sunday.
Chidzambwa plans to gradually introduce the older former players as the game progresses, trying to keep the balance and avoid total humiliation in the exhibition match.
Fears were that some of the former greats called in to face the visiting former Barcelona players were no longer strong enough for a competitive game.
Such a situation was reason why organisers initially wanted to mix active Warriors players with the former greats.
The squad announced is made up of players from different generations with some of the youngest being Edward Sadomba and Desmond Maringwa. Some of the oldest include Moses Chunga and Madinda Ndlovu.
“We will make sure that we have a starting line-up made up of more active players. We will then gradually introduce the other players, trying to make sure that we maintain the balance,” Chidzambwa told H-Metro.
Chidzambwa was in Harare yesterday as preparations for the match started.
“I’m still to get more details from the association, but yes I’m here for that game and we are hoping all goes well.”
Judging from Chidzambwa’s strategy, chances are high that the likes of Dumisani Mpofu, Norman Mapeza, Gift Muzadzi, Thulani Ncube, Kalisto Pasuwa, Benjani, Sadomba and Peter Ndlovu could make the starting line-up.
Chidzambwa said such matches should continue in future as it brings the football family together.
“I don’t know how else it can be improved but I think this is a good idea that allows the players to come together after some time. It is a programme that should continue,” he said.
Chidzambwa will be assisted by Rahman Gumbo and David Mandigora. Mandigora recently had his leg amputated, uniting most of the former players into one as they tried to assist him.
“It is great for him to be part of this technical department. I’m sure this will help him to socialise more with others and be part of the football family again. We are happy he is part of the technical team,” he said.
Former Barcelona players set to face the former Zimbabwe greats include Edmílson, Rivaldo, Simão Sabrosa, Edgar Davids, Gianluca Zambrotta, Ludovic Giuly, Francesco Coco, Gaizka Mendieta, Jesús Angoy (goalkeeper), Eric Abidal, Sergi Barjuán, Giovanni Silva, Deco and Albert Ferrer who will be coach.
Ahead of this exhibition match, there has been debate on who qualifies to be called a Warriors legend, with most critics arguing that the majority of the players called are club legends rather.
