Man (50) arrested over $13K fraud
1 February 2018
A 50-YEAR-OLD CrowBrough man has been arrested for allegedly defrauding his colleagues of $13 800.
Coster Dembetembe was not asked to plead when he appeared before Harare magistrate Rumbidzai Mugwagwa charged with fraud.
He was asked to pay $100 bail and the case was remanded to February 27.
Allegations are that in 2011, Viyasi Bepura and Ronny Nyamudzurwa joined Dembetembe’s Makomborero Housing cooperative and paid $7200 and $6600 respectively.
On June 16 2016, the cooperative received an offer letter from the City of Harare under Warren Park D Pay Scheme allocating them stands in Warren Park D.
After receiving the letter, they held a meeting and Dembetembe said he had paid $21000 for intrinsic value of the land.
From that day, Dembetembe could not be located by his colleagues and he failed to give them satisfactory answers about the position of the stands.
Bepura and Nyamudzurwa then approached him on January 29 this year at his place to show them the receipts and proof that he has paid the money.
Dembetembe failed to produce the receipts saying that they were at the City of Harare’s Remembrance building.
They went to the city of Harare and Dembetembe led them to various offices but failed to produce the receipts.
That is when they discovered that Dembetembe did not pay for the stands.
Bepura and Nyamudzurwa then filed a police report leading to Dembetembe’s arrest.
The value prejudiced is $13 800 and nothing was recovered.
