Mhofu reveals Majarira gamble
28 June 2017
WARRIORS interim coach Sunday ‘Mhofu’ Chidzambwa says he took a gamble by calling Blessing Majarira for national duty.
Majarira, who plays for Division One side, Herentals was a surprise inclusion in Mhofu’s squad ahead of the COSAFA Castle Cup in South Africa.
The striker made his international debut in the Warriors 4-0 drubbing against Mozambique at Moruleng Stadium on Monday.
Majarira replaced Talent Chawapihwa in the 80th minute and scored the final goal in injury time.
“We just wanted to see his reaction and how he can adapt to the team. It’s a different game when one plays for the national team.
“It was a big gamble to bring him here. At times, it works. He is the top goal scorer in Division One with approximately 10 in 14 games. That says a lot about a striker despite the fact that he is not in the top league.
“Of cause, people were talking negatively about him because they don’t know him,” he said.
Majarira is fighting for recognition with the likes of Knox Mutizwa, Michelle Katsvairo and Prince Dube upfront.
Chidzambwa said he is only looking for a brave leader upfront.
“It doesn’t matter if he is playing at a lower league. I don’t really care if he is unknown or not popular. I am looking for someone who is confident and can score goals. I want a match winner and a brave player upfront. In Zimbabwe, we have a challenge with strikers. In fact we have a crisis when it comes to such positions. I will put my trust in him for now.”
