Mountaineers Logan Cup champs
17 May 2018
MANICALAND Mountaineers were crowned Logan Cup champions for the second successive season and for the third-time overall after stepping onto the podium for the 2017-18 season at Takashinga Cricket Club yesterday.
Despite drawing with Rising Stars, Mountaineers had done enough to secure the Logan Cup ahead of Bulawayo Metropolitan Tuskers who stood an outside chance of challenging for honours if they had made an overhaul of Midlands Rhinos as the mountain goats drastically lost.
This was not to be as rain ensured that both games ended in draws thus making Mountaineers rule Four-Day cricket once again having also won the 2016-17 title -both times under coach Shepherd Makunura.
Their maiden Logan Cup jubilation was in 2013-14 season with Gary Brent.
Mountaineers coach Shepherd Makunura was ecstatic for accomplishing another Logan Cup title individually and collectively in a repeat of the previous season.
“It’s obviously a great feeling. I think every coach’s aspiration when you coach is to win trophies. This is a second one in a row its a good thing for Mountaineers and personally I am very happy,” he said.
Attention will now shift to the Pro50 Championship which continues on May 21 with all of its remaining games to be played in Harare at Harare Sports Club, Old Hararians Sports Club and Takashinga.
