TEN people, who were on their way to a funeral, were killed in a road traffic accident near Banket along the Harare-Chirundu highway on Tuesday.
Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the accident urging motorists to exercise caution on the roads.
“As Zimbabwe Republic Police, we continue to urge drivers to always be cautious on the roads and to avoid night driving,” said Snr Ass-Comm Charamba.
“Most fatal road traffic accidents occur at night due to poor visibility coupled with other factors.
“We announce a very sad development where a fatal road traffic accident occurred at 2210hrs at the 60km peg along the Harare-Chirundu road, Mapinga on Tuesday where 10 people were killed.
“The ZRP expresses sincere condolences to the bereaved families.
“Circumstances are that a driver of a Nissan Caravan commuter omnibus was driving towards Chinhoyi with ten passengers on board when he encroached into the lane of oncoming haulage truck resulting in a head on collision.
“Both vehicles veered off the road and landed in a ditch with the truck on top of the Nissan Caravan and it believed that the kombi was ferrying mourners to a funeral.
“As a result of the collision, the driver of the Nissan Caravan together with eight other passengers sustained head injuries and died on the spot whilst one passenger died on admission at Banket District Hospital.
“An injured passenger was referred to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for treatment.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police appeals to all drivers to be cautious on the road and observe all road rules and regulations.
“It is everyone’s responsibility to safeguard lives on the road and please avoid night driving and always be on the lookout of oncoming traffic when you want to overtake.
“Please let us all respect road rules and regulations and remember we are a law abiding country,” said Snr Ass-Comm Charamba.
