Zimbabwe Table Tennis Union (ZTTU) will early next month host a closed door national tournament.

The annual tournament, which is meant to select the national team, will be held at Winhood College in Ruwa.

ZTTU technical director Noah Ferenando said his association is ready to host the tournament.

“This tournament is one of the biggest tournaments on our national team calendar, so we prepare thoroughly for it.

“We are more than ready to host this tournament.

“Almost all provinces and all of our registered players have confirmed their participation.

“Since this tourney determines every player’s national ranking as well as a chance to get selected for the national team, every registered player is coming,” Ferenando said.

The ZTTU technical director added that his union is aiming for gold medals when they play the Chinese in September.

“We have huge task against the Chinese in September.

“They are coming to Zimbabwe and the tournament will be at Belvedere Teachers’ College

“We are aiming for gold medals despite the fact that China has the best table tennis players because table tennis is their national sport.

“We cannot afford to be defeated on our own soil,” he added.

Ferenando added that his association is however facing financial challenges and they are limiting his squad from reaching greater heights.

“We are doing very well in Table tennis.

“Recently two of our players qualified to go and participate in the American sports festival but they couldn’t travel because of lack of finances.

“I think it is time for our people to start giving fair support to these minority sports.

“We are doing well, all we need is support financially and morally,” he said.
