27 December 2017
NINE people perished on Christmas Day road traffic accidents and 42 were injured throughout the country.
Deputy Police spokesperson chief superintendent Paul Nyathi in his statement urged drivers to be cautious on the roads and value people’s lives.
“A total of 89 road traffic accidents were recorded on Christmas Day as compared to 96 recorded in 2016,” said Chief Supt Nyathi.
“Nine people died on Christmas Day as compared to 16 in 2016 and this shows a significant reduction because of awareness campaigns carried by police and other stakeholders that includes Road Safety Council of Zimbabwe.
“Forty-two people were injured as compared to 45 recorded last year and by this we want to urge drivers to exercise extreme caution on the roads and value the sanctity of people’s lives,” said Chief Supt Nyathi.
Chief Supt Nyathi also confirmed death of 15 people in 13 fatal road accidents that were recorded on Unit Day urging drivers to desist from taking alcohol and drugs which he said might impair their judgments when operating machinery. a
