PREMIERSHIP’S MAD WEEKEND
5 June 2018
WITH five red cards, Week 15 became the most volatile programme in the history of the domestic Premiership.
These were not just five red cards but five dismissals of players from the Premiership’s heavyweights –Highlanders, Dynamos, CAPS United and Ngezi Platinum in the same weekend.
The ‘madness’ started on Saturday as Highlanders right back, Andrew Mbeba was red carded by referee Norman Matemera following an ugly lunge on Harare City’s Malvin Gaki at Rufaro. The red card came with the teams tied 1-1 but 10-man Highlanders went on to claim it 2-1.
In Sunday’s games, CAPS United goalkeeper Prosper Chigumba was red carded for a professional foul after just two minutes against Mutare City at the National Sports Stadium as he handled the ball way outside of the box.
Mutare City won the game 2-1 for only their second win of the campaign so far.
At Gibbo, Dynamos captain Ocean Mushure was expelled as he protested Triangle’s second goal in a 3-0 defeat.
Ngezi Platinum suffered their first defeat of the campaign, losing 1-0 at Bulawayo Chiefs who ended a seven-match winless run. Not only did they suffer a first defeat, Ngezi Platinum became the first team to finish a game with nine men this season.
Even more bizarre was that the red cards went to second half substitutes Clive Augusto and Xolisani Moyo. Moyo lasted nine minutes after coming in as the final substitute in the 73rd minute as he wrongly dismissed for an off-the-ball incident. Augusto, who had been cautioned for diving, got his second yellow card for dissent.
