Star FM celebrates local music
15 July 2016
STAR FM is dedicating the month of July towards promoting purely Zimbabwean music.
The celebrations are being held under the theme ‘ZimNtulikazi’, a Ndebele world word for July.
“We are very keen to give a platform to our own artistes as we are a proudly Zimbabwean radio station.
“We are of the opinion that if we do not promote our own, we can’t expect others to, so this July we will be playing only music from our own musicians,†station General Manager Comfort Mbofana said.
The station has been growing its music library in preparation of the month long celebration of local music and is calling on artistes to submit their material for possible airplay.
Musicians and other industry players have come out in full support of this initiative with solidarity messages being aired from artistes like Leonard Karikoga Zhakata, Fungisayi Zvakavapano-Mashavave, Cynthia Mare, Prayer soul, Bulawayo hip-hop artiste P.O.Y and DJ Stavo amongst others.
“This is an excellent initiative by Star FM and we are in full support of this move to promote Zimbabwe’s music under the theme ‘ZimNtulikazi’,†Zora music maestro Leonard Zhakata said at the station.
Last month, the station scored another first by broadcasting from the UK with the very popular 326 Express drive show hosted by Phathisani Sibanda and Kudzai Violet Gwara (KVG).
The station has also in recent months won numerous awards including the prestigious Media Organisation of the Year in the recently held Zim Achievers Awards held in the UK.
