SULU NOW THICK SKINNED
24 January 2018
HOURS after facing a Harare magistrate charged with maintenance default, Suluman Chimbetu appeared on stage wearing a brave face to entertain his fans at Bar Rouge in the capital last Friday.
And in a buoyant mood, Sulu grabbed his acoustic guitar to join his Orchestra Dendera Kings band, a testimony that the man has developed a thick skin.
His face did not resemble that of anyone who slept in police cells a night before, or anyone who is facing an alleged offence with a probable jail sentence.
He was a normal Sulu who starts a show by greeting his fans, “kwaziwai kwaziwai ka” and before he even gets a response, he strummed his acoustic to begin the party.
And Sulu will carry on with his usual business when he stages a family show at Club Las Vegas in Southerton this Sunday.
The show has been organised after Sulu staged another fully subscribed show at the same venue on New Year’s Eve.
Speaking to H-Metro on how he manages to face his fans after some ‘embarrassing’ moments, he said:
“You need to develop a thick skin generally in life besides being a celebrity. That is the art I have mastered despite everything I face in life.
“Do I have to abandon a show because I am coming from court? Do I have to go in hiding because I appeared in the media with something negative?” he queried.
“We are performing at Club Las Vegas on Sunday. It’s a family show and we are inviting all fans to come in numbers and have fun.
“It’s been long before we held a family show in Harare and we are also returning to the venue by public demand after our performance there on New Year’s Eve.
Sulu has dominated the media the past year with his child care fights with former wife Marygold Mutemasango but never stopped holding live shows.
At one point, he had to reduce shows not because there were no bookings, but to battle a maintenance downward variation which he later won.
The musician’s publicist Joe Local Nyamungoma who also spoke to H-Metro concurred that his artiste has indeed developed a thick skin.
“Like any other musician worldwide, he needed that. A number of musicians have been in the media criticised but went on with their usual business.
“In fact, this is the life of a celebrity though 2017 was a bit too much but like a real soldier he remained firm,” said Local.
Prior to the Club Las Vegas Family show, Sulu performs at Iridium Life in the capital on Friday and has two other shows in Mberengwa and Zvishavane on Saturday.
