Sulu spared jail term

HEIR to the Orchestra Dendera Kings ensemble Sulumani Chimbetu yesterday overturned his not guilty plea when his trial over failure to pay maintenance opened at the Harare magistrates court.
The 35-year-old artiste entered a guilty plea when he appeared before Harare magistrate Amanda Muridzo for failure to pay maintenance for two children he sired with ex-wife Marygold Mutemasango.
The musician was convicted of his own plea and slapped with a wholly suspended five-month prison term on condition he clears the outstanding $4400 maintenance arrears by February 15.
The magistrate also ordered the musician to “immediately” deposit $300.
According to the State led by Hatizivo Chatikobo, Chimbetu failed to comply with a court order granted in December 2016 in which he was supposed to pay $800 for the maintenance of the two children.
