LAUNCH for Zimbabwe’s International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development has been set for June 2 in the capital.

The launch will start with a street procession from Africa Unity Square to Rainbow Towers.

The commemorations are in-line with the United Nations General Assembly, which declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.

“This is in recognition of tourism as one of the key pillars of economies as well as a transformative force for improving the quality of life of millions of people worldwide.

“The International Year aims at promoting among other things changes in policies, business practices and consumer behavior towards sustainable tourism thereby contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals,” read a statement from the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority.

It was added:

“Zimbabwe will promote tourism in areas such as the creation of awareness on tourism as an economic sector, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, social inclusiveness, employment and poverty reduction, resource efficiency, environmental protection and climate change, cultural values, diversity and heritage and mutual understanding, peace and security.”

A number of programmes and activities will be implemented throughout the year in support of the UN declaration.

As part of the commemorations this year, there are other programmes and activities which include sustainable tourism symposium, WTD celebrations, Sustainable Tourism exhibition at different fairs, community – operators partnerships, sustainable tourism social media challenge, sustainable tourism lecture series, clean-up campaign of tourism sites, green tourism awards and the sustainable tourism quiz show.
