THE unresolved case of Liberty Chakoroma could affect FC Platinum who must finalise their squad by January 15.

The real dispute is between Buffaloes and Ngezi Platinum.

On paper, indications are that Buffaloes have the rights to the player and who was on a season’s loan at Ngezi.

However, the Ngezi are said to have claimed that the player has another year with them.

With seven days left before FC finalise their squad of the CAF Champions league, the Zimbabwe champions have no choice but to wait for the outcome of a player they had already agreed terms with and included in their provisional squad.

“I’m sorry, we are not commenting on that particular issue,” FC Platinum club spokesperson Chido Chizondo said yesterday.

FC Platinum had already agreed terms with Chakoroma, who was given a better offer than the one he had at Ngezi Platinum.

Although Ngezi Platinum are one of the financially stable teams in the Premiership, they are still behind FC in terms of remuneration on average.

Chizondo added: “I can confirm that we have to finalise the team by January 15. What we submitted was just the provisional list. So, yes there could be one or two adjustments.”

The signing of Chakoroma was viewed as a major coup as the champions prepare for a date against Angolan champions Desportivo de Agosto.

The Angolans have won their league title 11 times since the club was formed in 1977.

If Norman Mapeza’s charges can brush aside their highly experienced opponents, they are likely to face ABSA Premiership side Bidvest Wits.

While FC are signing good players with CAF Champions league in mind, Ngezi Platinum are also aware the balance of power locally will also be greatly affected.

“Ngezi are aware what it means for FC Platinum to sign one of their best players. Their chances of winning the league title will also be greatly affected. That is why they also ensured that moves to try and sign left back Qadr Amini were also thwarted,” said a source close to the Ngezi players.

“In Chakoroma’s case, Ngezi claim he has another year. Buffaloes on the other hand are saying he was just there for a year loan. And Buffaloes are prepared to let the player join FC Platinum on the basis that he has reverted to them. The player is also not very happy at Ngezi and wants to go.”
