27 September 2017
POLICE have launched a manhunt for touts who allegedly caused the death of an informal trader at Simon Muzenda Bus Terminus on Monday.
While the bus driver and conductor of Smart Express have already been nabbed assisting police with investigations, the touts who allegedly caused the scene disappeared during the melee.
National Police spokesperson, Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the mishap which happened early yesterday.
In an interview with H-Metro, Snr Asst Comm Charamba said touting is illegal and the police are appealing to anyone who has information concerning this matter to contact them on (04) 748836, (04) 777651, (04) 703631 or any nearest police station.
“Touting is illegal and we are appealing to anyone who has information to kindly alert the police so that we arrest the perpetrators.
“We are going to take action against these touts.
“Police are arresting about 30 touts everyday but they are released after paying US$20 fines.
“There should be punitive measures to end touting in Zimbabwe.”
She also said the City of Harare must revisit their plan because the road is very dangerous.
“The council allowed this bus terminus, but it’s very dangerous because the road is narrow.
“It’s a dual carriageway but it’s now being disturbed by these buses which are ferrying people on this narrow road.
“It is very dangerous and we are appealing to anyone who has information or any links to this case to report to the police.”
“It’s unfortunate this man lost his life when he was battling with these touts.”
“These touts took his passport, national identity card and some money during the process.
Speaking to H-Metro another woman who was affected by this gruesome incident said:
“This man (deceased) was going to Mozambique.
“He was with his wife and Mahwindi amubata achimumu manikidza kumupinza mubus (touts forced him to board the bus).
“Mahwindi aya ava kutotyisa because the ways they are making people board buses is pathetic.
“Ladies are being fondled at this bus terminus. Police should do something, we are now fearing for our lives.
“It’s no longer safe to walk along that road because of these touts.”
“There should be operation Mahwindi Kumusha because they were offered land by the President (President R.G Mugabe) and they opted to spend their days stealing from people.
“Their fate has come, because the worst has happened. It’s not only happening here but even if you go to show grounds bus terminus you will see the same.”
Another man also blamed the police saying they were accepting bribes.
“It is disheartening that some of the police officers are coming here collecting bribes from these touts.
“I am not supporting this incident but, we are also angry because mapurisa ari kuwanza huori.
“They should be monitored too. Vanhu vanodhonzwa dhonzwa mapurisa akatarisa,” he said.
Some reports also state that the deceased was suffering from hypertension and he was diabetic which triggered the death after being stressed by touts.
When H-Metro crew visited the scene the body had been taken by the police.
