Uncle up for rape
22 December 2016
A 55-YEAR-OLD man was Wednesday taken to court facing accusations of raping his niece at gun point some seven years ago.
Saxton Chibanda, of Glen Norah B in Harare, appeared at the Harare magistrates’ court charged with rape.
Chibanda was not asked to plead to the charges when he appeared before magistrate Vongai Muchuchuti-Guwuriro who remanded him out of custody to January 19 on US$100 bail.
Allegations facing Chibanda are that sometime in August 2009, the victim visited her uncle at his place of residence in Glen Norah for the schools holiday.
Allegations are that Chibanda called his niece into his bedroom where he asked her to fetch him some water.
Accusations are that when his niece brought the water into his bedroom, he then closed the door from inside and shoved her on his bed.
Further accusations are that Chibanda then raped his niece.
The court heard that Chibanda threatened to shoot his niece if she revealed the matter to anyone.
He also allegedly threatened to shoot her in the event that she revealed to anyone that he had a gun.
The matter came to light last month when the woman revealed the sexual attack to her husband, who then decided to take the matter to the police.
Chibanda was arrested and taken to court charged with rape.
He is expected to return to court on January 19 for trial.
Peter Kachirika represented the State.
