We lacked self-belief: Mapeza

ZIMBABWEAN representatives in the CAF Champions League FC Platinum had a false start in the competition after succumbing to 3-0 mauling at the hands of Angolan Champions Clube Despotivo de Agosto at the 11 November Stadium yesterday.Mongo scored the first and Jacques scored a brace after the breather to humble the Zimbabweans.
The Zimbabweans host the Angolans in a fortnight at Mandava and coach Norman Mapeza says his side can overturn the deficit.
“You never know with football anything can happen we just need self-belief.
“We made mistakes and we were punished that is football.
“I told my players the first 15 minutes are very important but unfortunately we conceded but that is football I usually do not like to blame my players,” said Mapeza.
The hosts controlled the match in the early exchanges with the Zimbabweans still trying to adjust to the high temperatures in Luanda.
Agosto’s early dominance was rewarded when they surged ahead in the eighth minute with a Mongo strike after the defence was caught napping.
FC Platinum new signing Rahman Kutsanzira gave the host constant problems with his pinpoint passing and excellent ball distribution.
Ten minutes after the breather Agosto stamped authority on the match when Jacques scored the second for the host.
Agosto added gloss to the scoreline when Jacques completed his brace just after the hour mark to make it three to the good for the host.
Coach Mapeza tinkered with the engine room late on bringing Marshal Mudehwe and Kelvin Madzongwe which lifted their match giving them hope on the return leg.
Despite the comprehensive win Agosto coach Zoran Maki said the war is not yet over.
“We did a research about this team and they never conceded many goals so my team did very well today.
“This team is good so we need to play well in the return game,” he said.
