Woman loses $8K in botched car deal
31 October 2017
A HARARE woman has approached the courts to recover US$8 000 she lost to a car dealer after being sold a vehicle she had seen on the accused’s Facebook page.
Munyaradzi Chauraya, 38, was yesterday not asked to plead to theft of trust property charges when he appeared before Harare magistrate Josephine Sande.
The complainant in the matter is Clara Hambury.
The State led by prosecutor Sebastian Mutizirwa is alleging that the accused has a Facebook page logged as Cars for Cash which he used to swindle Hambury.
It is alleged on October 5 the complainant called Chauraya and requested to be shown some vehicles on sale since she was looking for a truck to buy.
Chauraya is believed to have sent pictures of a grey Isuzu single cab, registration number ABD9313 which he valued at US$8000.
Further allegations are that on October 22, Hambury withdrew US$8000 from her CABS bank account which she gave accused for the vehicle purchase.
Chauraya is said to have promised Hambury that he will deliver the vehicle on the same day he received the money, to which he did not fulfil.
Chauraya is said to have failed to deliver the car and used the money to his own use. Police managed to recover US$3000.
Magistrate Sande ordered Chauraya to deposit US$100 bail and return to court on November 23 for trial commencement.
