ZVIREKWI TO CAPTAIN WARRIORS
22 December 2016
WARRIORS coach Kalisto Pasuwa has confirmed that Hardlife Zvirekwi will captain the Warriors against Ivory Coast on Monday.
The friendly will be the Warriors’ first serious preparatory match ahead of AFCON finals in Gabon. They are also expected to face Cameroon and Gabon before the tournament.
Zimbabwe will be in the same group with Tunisia, Algeria and Senegal, a historic appearance after a 10-year absence.
On Monday Pasuwa will have to do without some of the foreign-based players, including team captain Willard Katsande.
“Now I think we need these guys to be focused so that they can play. We have mostly the local-based for that match and we have to also give them a challenge. Remember we have Hardlife Zvirekwi and I think he is going to captain the team,” Pasuwa said.
Pasuwa was speaking on the sidelines of the unveiling of the Warriors sponsorship from NetOne in Harare.
The reigning Castle Lager Soccer Star of the Year was also in attendance and hailed NetOne for coming on board to help the Warriors.
“We really appreciate the gesture from NetOne. Them coming on board I think it is something that is going to give a lot of focus in the team.
“So it is a good thing for us the players considering that now we have to put our mind to football,” Zvirekwi said.
On the upcoming friendly matches, he said: “I think that is the way to go. They are not easy opponents but tough opponents and that is the way to. They are household names in football and that is good for our football.”
Zvirekwi has also been thinking about his future at a time when he could move from CAPS United to a foreign club.
“I’m not distracted by anything at all. I’m really looking forward to the AFCON because I also understand it is a very big platform to try and impress foreign clubs. So I’m looking forward to it, play my role and see how it goes,” he said.
